Camilla Taylor: 静かな友達 - Quiet Friend

Camilla Taylor (b. 1981 in Utah, USA; lives and works in Los Angeles) is an artist recognized for her monochromatic sculptures and prints, often made in connection with the human body, architectural elements and the notion of inner self.

 

Frequently working with found or reclaimed items, reusing and repurposing the discarded, her approach to materials is influenced by her upbringing in a small religious community.

The past is not always left behind in that process but rather becomes a part of the story, attached to a sense of becoming and perception, sometimes of life and death. 

 

Some of the recurring elements in her works include hands, chairs, knots, stairs, birds and trees, in relation to the intimate aspect of daily things. Showing us the invisible, the ambivalent, the individual element within the numerous and the sense of loss or belonging a group may provide, the artist is questioning us and our senses. In that process, she often challenges herself to exploring new techniques, such as engraving or text-based artworks, and tries to create a connection between most of her works, often including some secrets to discover.

 

Camilla Taylor has exhibited in the United States, in Japan and in Australia. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Utah, and a Master of Fine Arts from California State University. She is also a printmaking teacher at the School of the Arts and Architecture of UCLA.​
